Fashion and Design - Annual Program

The annual program’s fashion and design class allows younger kids to explore the wonders of sewing and creating items whether it be garments, bags, pillows or funny stuffed animals. It’s exciting for young kids to be able to draw out their ideas and learn how to draw out a pattern for what they are wanting to make, cutting the fabric, and finally sewing it together so they can use it. Students will learn hand stitching and how to safely use the sewing machines I have. The students share their ideas with the group and become inspired by each other and before they know it, they have made new friends and enjoy laughing with each other while sewing. This class has many moving pieces, especially with the kid’s sewing kits so things can quickly become chaotic if a student loses focus in class or does not come prepared. While the studio does have a few spare sewing machines and kits, the class really teaches the kids how to manage their kits, care and maintain them, and develop their responsibility through a creative and social journey that is just a riot and so rewarding to see them develop and create.

What You Need Before Attending

What We Will Provide

The studio has fabrics that have been generously donated to us, so the kids are most welcome to use these fabrics if they like them.

I also have a few sewing machines and a large sewing kit for the kids to use in the event they forget their kits.

What You Must Supply Yourself

You must supply your own sewing kit so the students can get the most out of the class.

Your sewing kit should include:
  • fabric scissors

  • all-purpose thread (for sewing machines)

  • needles

  • pins

  • fabric

The most important thing is: Responsibility.

It is important for all students to have their own sewing kit as this develops independence and responsibility. The students quickly realize that they are constantly needing their items especially when they get started in putting things together which will allow each child to utilize the full time of the class and be more efficient without trying to find where everything has gone. Things go missing very quickly and having your own sewing kit makes the class run more smoothly. Students are motivated to exercise their awareness every day as they manage this responsibility to bring their creations to life.
